Chosen Solitude
Art + Reflection by Sofia Rector
Chosen Solitude
by Sofia Rector
It takes chosen silence—solitude—
to trace the shape of a tree,
to follow the movement of its growth:
first the trunk,
then branch
by branch.
When all is patient stillness,
the birds arrive like thoughts,
travelling along the trunk's tributaries.
Then off they fly,
leaving a memory of motion.
In quiet attention, I see
the tide of Spring's green rising,
reaching up to crest these bare branches,
till all foams with life.
