Underground Work
Art + reflection by Sofia Rector
In the story of an acorn:
the windblown fall,
cap-jarring impact,
its burial and abandonment,
the breakdown of seed coat and fruit wall
the quiet, imperceptible expansion of roots
the first visible signs of upward-reaching, fragile re-creation…
I see a partial yet potent picture of God’s surprising, mysterious, and often hidden work of renewal and redemption.
When an acorn falls, when a seed is planted, all I see is a drift of dirt. But so much is happening underground to bring life out of that dark place of brokenness.
In the story of an acorn, I hear echoes of the Resurrection. I remember to entrust the shame, the loss, the fear (and more) to God’s hands, for he is patiently, creatively, working beyond death to life.
