EP 14: REST AS A RESOLUTION

Christine opens up about her recent struggle with burnout and chats with rest and worthiness expert, Emily K. Louis. Together, they discuss the endemic exhaustion that women are especially experiencing and why so many of us confuse people-pleasing productivity with God-glorifying priorities. Emily then shares 3 practical practices to help us SHIFT the way we look at rest, plus offers The Holy Shift community an “Anti-challenge Challenge” to rest and belonging.

Scripture

Psalm 62:1-2

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

Psalm 46: 1-5, 10

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day… He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Jesus, in Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Jesus, in Matthew 11:28-30 THE MESSAGE

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Quotes

“Exhaustion is endemic…especially for women… especially in church culture.” CCP

“How do we live a restful life when everything around us is saying the opposite? We have to be preaching the gospel to ourselves daily.” EKL

“My inability to rest comes from fear and pride. Fear that if I don’t put enough out into the world, I won’t be welcome in it… and pride because I do feel a sense of worthiness when...” CCP

“Remember that you’re a human being and not a human doing.” EKL

“If we could do ourselves a HUGE favor, we could reframe what productivity is anyway.” EKL

”What we don’t need to be doing is shouldering people’s unrealistic expectations and unhealthy emotions, and calling that ministry. We need to unmuddy our theology and separate what is God-glorifying and what is people-pleasing. I’m guilty of calling one the other.” CCP

“We have to get to a place where we can extend so much grace to ourselves, and that’s what healing is.” EKL

The list of demands on our time seems to be never-ending

It can leave you feeling a little guilty–like you should always be doing one more thing.

Rather than sharing better time-management tips to squeeze more hours out of the day, Kelly Kapic takes a different approach in You’re Only Human. He offers a better way to make peace with the fact that God didn’t create us to do it all.

Staying busy is easy. Staying well rested-now there’s a challenge.

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional.

Rest, Restore, Connect, Create

As a society, we are in the throes of a collective panic attack. Anxiety and loneliness are on the rise, with 77% of our population experiencing physical symptoms of stress on a regular basis. We feel pressure chasing careers, security, and keeping up. We worry about health, politics, and many other complexities we can’t control. Eventually we find our minds spinning, trying to cope or manage a low hum of anxiety unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. But Rebekah reminds us that it doesn’t have to stay this way.

It’s Impossible to Be Spiritually Mature, While Remaining Emotionally Immature

Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: you can’t be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was the pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do–avoid conflict in the name of Christianity; ignore his anger, sadness, and fear; use God to run from God; and live without boundaries.

APPLICATION

we cultivate experiences that restore healing and wholeness to communities from the outside in.

The Well Summit creates spaces that unpack the things holding us back from peace, flourishing and union with Jesus. We repack what is true about God and who He says we are. Our prayer is that as we live in union with Jesus and unity with one another – that together – we will live unleashed to bring the Kingdom near.

If you go to the gym and pick up a two-pound weight, it wouldn’t be difficult for most people. Even though it’s light, lifting it over and over again will eventually wear you out. You’ll get fatigued. You’ll lose your patience. You’ll want to quit. In this course on caregiver burnout, Dr. Henry Cloud is going to walk you through the principles of compassion fatigue, help you set limits on what you are and are not able to do, and help you connect with others who can offer you support when you’re feeling worn out and worn down.
