DNDW 3: SHIFTING

Feeling frazzled or frustrated in faith and life? Christine chats with author, podcaster, and Spiritual Director Emily P. Freeman about embracing spiritual curiosity, integrating our theology with our humanity, and recognizing how the rooms and relationships we live in—and the rhythms and rituals we live by—shape who we are becoming.

They also explore questions like:

  • Are women allowed to have desires?
  • Can we trust ourselves?
  • Is soul care new age or woo-woo?
  • How do we move toward God and others?
  • How can we discern when to walk away from someone/something?

If you are stuck in analysis paralysis or hoping to make some holy shifts in your own faith & life, this episode is for you!

Scripture

OLD HEART | NEW HEART

Jeremiah 17:9: The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Ezekiel 36:26: And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Jeremiah 31:33: But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the LORD. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

PROVERBS 16

3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. 9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

PSALM 139

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Ecclesiastes 3

1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

psalm 23

1-3, 6 God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.

Quotes

  • I think we would all do well to be reminded that there is a divine well from which you can draw, that you are seen and held there, and that there’s nothing that you can do to make God love you more or less. – EPF
  • I think a lot of times when we find ourselves trying something new or different, we’re not even sure what it is we’re seeking. We just know maybe we’re looking for something more. The goal [of spiritual practices] is always going to be union with and connection with God. – EPF
  • As someone made in God’s image, I don’t think God is ever telling us to not be who we are. – EPF
  • Somehow we’ve decided that we’re not allowed to be human. We have got to get back to integrating our theology with our humanity. – CC
  • I get a lot of pushback when I encourage people to consider the question, “What if you could trust yourself?” And women freak all the way out. But what if you could trust yourself? What if your emotions are allowed in the room? What if that’s important information for you to have? I’m not saying trust your emotions to the exclusion of everything else. I’m not saying trust yourself above all else and only yourself to the exclusion of everyone else. But what if you could trust yourself too? What if you also got to have a voice at the table along with trusted advisors, along with the spirit of God within you? – EPF
